Specification of DRIVE SHAFT
The term drive shaft first appeared in the mid-19th century. In republishing the Stover 1861 patent for planing and matching machines, this term is used to refer to a shaft driven by a belt in which the engine is moved. This term is not used in the original patent. Another early use of this term occurred in the republishing of 1861 patents for Watkins and Bryson lawn mowers. Here, this term refers to the transmit power of the engine wheel to the gear that works with a cutting mechanism.
